Sergey Tokarev, an investor of RefaceAl and IT businessman, told how Doublicat became one of the most-downloaded apps on AppStore and GooglePlay within a few months. Dozens of Ukrainian developers enter global app markets every year. Some of them get huge attraction and millions of users download their apps and games. TravelPost, Fander, and Waterbalance are the successful apps launched by Ukrainian developers in recent times.
Doublicat is another successful project launched by RefaceAl, a Ukrainian IT development company. The app was released on January 13, 2020. In the first two months, the app was downloaded by more than 750,000 users. In the first three months, the app surpassed the milestone of 1 million downloads. Tokarev recently expressed how the company managed to achieve such an amazing result.
RefaceAl is relatively a young company that was launched in 2011. In the beginning, the development team worked on improving the existing machine learning methods. After getting confidence and experience, the team started working on the development of its own artificial intelligence algorithm in the field of face replacement. At first, the name of the company was NeoCortext. After making its own algorithm, the company was rebranded as RefaceAl.
How RefaceAl created Doublicat
Before reaching the creation of the Doublicat app, RefaceAl went through several important stages. The company took three years to develop its own technology. After the creation of technology, the company took seven months to create the Reflect app. The Reflect app was released by the company last year. Elon Musk, a renowned engineer and IT entrepreneur, shared some results of the app on his Twitter account. Sergey Tokarev said, “Media around the world began to post and show these photos, and the number of Reflect downloads was growing significantly.”
The Reflect app allows the users to replace the faces on photos and images. After the successful launch of it, the developers took one year to reach the creation of Doublicat. Doublicat allows face replacement on GIF images. Sergey Tokarev said, “As a result, we got an app, Doublicat, that works with GIF animations.”
The Uniqueness of Doublicat
According to Sergey Tokarev, the secret behind the success of Doublicat is its unique technology. It made the app stand out from a number of similar face replacement apps. The technology used in Doublicat is based on an algorithm of machine learning without a teacher. Other similar development companies use computer-generated imaginary (CGI) technology in their apps. Tokarev said, “Unlike most companies that work with CGI technology, we use only artificial intelligence. This way, we make the final images maximum realistic.”
Future Prospects of RefaceAl
Sergey Tokarev shared some of the future goals of RefaceAl. He said that the company was working to reach the final stage of the monetization in the field of face replacement. He added that the technology could be used in the video in cinema, advertisement, and computer games. They have already tried it by creating a so-called “kinoselfie” project for one of the Ukrainian cinema networks.
Now, the focus of the development team is on replacing the faces on videos. It is also working on improving the existing algorithm to produce more realistic results. Moreover, the company is working on overcoming the challenge of the negative use of the app. Some people are using the app with bad faith to damage the reputation of others on the internet and social media. According to Tokarev, all the photos and GIFs created in their apps are protected with logos and watermarks, but the company is currently also working on developing a mechanism that will determine the authenticity of photos, videos, and GIFs online.
